Zion- To the narrows but not through…

Zion National Park

We had a workout today! Early start, drove one mile through a tunnel to be confronted by towering cliffs of red sandstone that stun you to silence.

First stop, the Court of the Patriarchs, we rushed to block in the shadows in red, magenta, purple, and red oxide and place highlights in salmon, orange, and naples yellow.

After working up an appetite, we feasted on angus beef hamburgers and then took a nap under the giant cottonwoods that dotted the lawn.

Shuttled on to the famous narrows, where we hauled our gear to a prime painting spot on the river. We hid our gear in the shade and hiked on to the trail end where you can wade in the river until the 3000 ft. canyon walls close in until you can touch both walls. But we choose to err on the side of caution because of the fast water from the previous days rain.Entrance to The Narrows, Zion

Returned to our gear to paint the afternoon light in the canyon. Jean had a visit from an aggressive ground squirrel which ate through her pack and into a bag of cookies. It also chewed through one of her pack straps. Meanwhile Eunice fended off an aggressive Australian who suggested it would be easier to take a photo.Ground Squirrel attack on back pack

We were exhausted but we still had to haul our gear back to the car and then on to our hotel where we relaxed with a swim, a dip in the hot tub, and a cold beer.

Tomorrow we’re going to paint familiar views we’ve seen in Maynard Dixon’s and Edgar Payne’s work.

  1. Hi Lorraine- Jean here. This is a real vacation. We stopped at the MD gallery and saw all the paintings. Eunice is working on techno app. to upload via mobile device – not so easy it turns out

  2. Photos are easy to upload from a computer but there is no upload from a cell phone. I tried uploading to my acct on another website and retrieving it from there but it didn’t accept the URL.
